The Protobox Octonian is the predecessor to the ICE Box. The Octonian is a rear projection, 8 channel (top and sides), out the window flight simulator. It is an immersive system built for single seat fighter aircraft such as the F-15, F-16. F-22 and JSF. Because the cockpit is rolled in and out from the back of the system, it isn’t considered fully immersive. One of the key differentiators for the Octonian system is its ability to provide a high resolution Heads-Up-Display that is superimposed over the Out-The-Window display, taking two displays and combining them into a single system.
Multiple Octonians have been constructed and deployed at the Air Force Research Laboratories at Wright Patterson AFB. They are used extensively for various studies and research with Air Force pilots.
